A Caring Place Child Advocacy Center // Color Run
A Caring Place Child Advocacy Center (ACP) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit agency located in Wintersville, OH. ACP serves children who are victims of abuse and suspected victims of abuse and their non-offending parents through forensic interviews and medical exams, and connecting the family with vital information and resources. They also lead a multi-disciplinary team that follows the child’s case, bringing together the community agencies and professionals who are needed until the case is fully closed. Families have involvement with multiple agencies throughout the process, and navigating them alone can be challenging and frightening. The multi-disciplinary team works collaboratively with law enforcement, CYS, the prosecutor’s office, and any other agencies the family deals with along the way. In addition, ACP serves the greater community by offering community prevention and education throughout the year.
Community prevention and education are offered throughout the year, as well as by request. They provide training and educational opportunities in schools to students of all ages, as well as to school staff, as well as anyone in the community who requests this service. If ACP does not already have the curriculum or training topic requested, they will get it, or even develop it if they have to, in order to educate the community.
Other initiatives happen during the year, as well. For instance, they hold community events in April for Child Abuse Prevention Month. The pinwheel, a symbol for child abuse prevention, represents the joy and innocence that childhood should be for all children. In April, ACP joins with area elementary students and members of the community, to “plant” pinwheels and hang signs for National Child Abuse Prevention on the lawn of Jefferson County Courthouse and along the fence of the Sheriff’s Department. They also hold a public event “Sundaes with the Sheriff.” Children and families are invited to attend with the local law enforcement and other multidisciplinary team members. They put up bounce houses and other inflatables and set up an ice cream sundae bar. ACP shares what they have to offer the community, and members of the multidisciplinary team, who are often nearing burnout, can attend and interact with community children in a positive setting.
COLOR FOR HOPE FUN RUN
ACP is primarily funded through grants, private donations, and business donations. They have done fundraising events in the past, particularly an annual casino night fundraiser. The casino night event was canceled due to COVID in 2020, and upon evaluation, it was determined that the return was not high enough to justify the cost of the event. The “Color for Hope” 5K/1Mile Fun Run is a more affordable option. The plan lays out the process for the agency to make $15,000 at this event.
